Teachers and leaders have the pivotal responsibility to establish and maintain conditions that facilitate the success of children learning mathematics in languages that differ from their first language. The positioning of multilingual learners affects their identities, participation, and abilities to develop communicative, social and academic competencies. Dr. Kathryn Chval will share how exceptional teachers establish conditions for student success in the mathematics classroom. She will discuss specific strategies that facilitate access and engagement for all learners and their families.
Kathryn Chval is the Dean of the College of Education and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Illinois Chicago. (UIC). Dean Chval is a respected educator, scholar, and leader. She is the lead author of Teaching Math to Multilingual Students: Positioning English Learner for success, as well as multiple books published by NCTM. Her collection of work and research in schools, communities, and universities is focused on designing mathematical experiences that draw on student and family resources and interests, empathy, research, and practice.
There is a $20 fee to register. A professional learning book will be provided. Lunch will also be provided.
